Phoenix, Arizona. (February 1, 2002) Dan Holtz of Pacific Palisades, Calif. will lead a field of 42 Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring cars to green on Saturday, February 2, 2002 to kick off the 2002 NASCAR racing season. The NAPA Auto Parts "Winter Heat" presented by Bosch is the first event of the 2002 racing season for the FSWS as they begin their 17th season of competition. Ryan Hemphill, David Gilliland, Sean Woodside, and Brandon Whitt transferred from the Non-Qualifiers race to make the grid for the 100-lap event on the one-mile paved oval known as the "Desert Jewel". Hemphill led all 20-laps of the preliminary event.
Following Holtz in qualifying was Ed Hoffman of Wheaton, Ill., Eddy McKean, and Ken Schrader. Defending Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series, NASCAR Touring champion Kevin Hamlin, clocked in with the 24th fastest time, while Jeff Jefferson of Naches, Wash., paced the northwest contingent with the 7th fastest time.
