Phoenix: Jeg Coughlin Friday summary

Jeg Coughlin has sights set on improving.

In the first of the four scheduled qualifying sessions Jeg Coughlin and his JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier took on the left lane. The left lane has historically been the lane of choice for the factory hot rods at Firebird International Raceway.

The reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion posted a 6.856 at 200.86 mph. The run was good enough to move him into the No. 5 spot after the first session.

"We did not want to be on the aggressive side our first time down the track," said Jeg. "We put a new engine between the frame rails for this race and so far we are pleased. We know we have some room for improvement in the first 60-feet. There is more left under the hood and that is not a bad position to be in after your first run of the weekend."

Jeg ran the right lane in the second session. Teammate and older brother Troy Coughlin ran the right lane during the first session. The team was able to tune the car from the data Troy obtained earlier in the day.

"It is nice to be able to use data from Troy's run," noted Jeg. "You go into the lane you have not run armed with a little more information and information is key to making decisions when you are in a zero tolerance world."

Jeg ran a 6.893 at 200.89 mph. The run was not an improvement over his prior time and he slipped to the No. 9 position.

"We are looking forward to improving in the morning when we move over to the left lane," said Jeg.
