SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2004) - Ron Capps drove his Roland Leong-tuned green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to a performance of 4.974 seconds at 301.87 mph Friday at Infineon Raceway to claim the No. 11 qualifying position following two of four scheduled qualifying runs.
Capps opened qualifying by recording a run of 8.840 at 97.29 after losing traction on his first qualifying attempt, before stepping up and improving after posting the 4.974, 301.87 effort in his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper.
"We were near the front of the line for the second pass, so a lot of other guys had the chance to make changes after seeing what the track would hold," Capps said. "With that in mind, I'm very happy with that run. Roland (Leong) and the guys are doing a great job."
The 1997 Funny Car winner at Infineon Raceway looks to move up in the Funny Car order when qualifying continues at noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday afternoon.
