Birmingham, Alabama, May 19 -- In his second race in the international Fran-am series, driver Kuno Wittmer collected a ninth place finish at the new barber motorsports facility in Birmingham, Alabama. Moreover, Gelles Racing was the best team with all three cars in the top ten. Beside the 9th place of Wittmer, Antoine Bessette completed the race in 7th but Brit Charles hall, Fran-Am winter series winner, was the best with his first Pro 2000 victory. Starting from fifth row, Kuno charged hard to gain valuable positions but instead experienced brake problems that dropped him back in sixteenth place. As the race progressed, the problem disappeared and the Hudson born racer passed seven cars on his way to a ninth overall. Results are still provisional since two cars were still impounded for scrutiny and Wittmer could wind up as high as 7th.
"It was a good race, admitted Kuno, getting out of the cockpit. Too bad I was slowed down in the first laps. My brakes felt very hard as if the pedal was blocked. Once the blockage was cured, I went back to work and squeezed my way through the field. Too bad there weren't more laps, I was on a roll! "
Good team work
This weekend again, Kuno only had good words for his crew. "I like to work with Lolo Perdomo. Our prime objective is to understand the car and the best way to set it up. Here, at the barber motorsports complex, I had to learn the track before we could work on the setup. We lost valuable time. It will be different in Montreal since i have raced there since 1999. Atmosphere is wonderful in the team. We share our impressions in order to get the best possible setup. This is why Charles, Antoine and myself have all improved from the first race in phoenix." it proved right as Kuno showed consistent lap times among the five best.
Montreal : next stop
Next race will take the Fran-am circus to Montreal for the first visit in Canada as part of the Canadian Grand Prix on June 13, 14 and 15. "It's always very exciting, added Kuno, to race in your home town with gamily and friends attending. Especially on a track like the famous Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve as part of a formula one weekend. I'll try to make the best of my experience here (4th in the Atlantic race in 2000 and a few FFord races). I'm really anxious."
