Challenges inspire Ernest Corbett

"A howling charge over the ramparts of life" is how 60-year old Ernest Corbett describes his participation in the Absa Off Road Championship.

Corbett Snr., the father of Special Vehicle championship contender, Mark, spent years riding off road motorcycles with Mark and his friends and decided in 2003 that he would like to try his hand at off road racing before he got to old.

The debonair property developer invested in a Class B BAT, which he campaigns under the Century Property Developments banner, and, along with son-in-law and co-driver Warwick Goosen has achieved some success.

"For me off road racing is more about the sheer joy of facing the challenges of the race and overcoming them than achieving success," said Ernest Corbett. "At my age winning isn't everything and its more a case of enjoying the outdoors with my family."

"We spend a lot of time, as a family, travelling in sub-Saharan Africa and entering the various races in the Absa Off Road Championship."

Corbett Snr., who regards off road racing as a greater leveller than golf, devotes his time and efforts to assisting entrepreneurs to do better in business, to educational programmes for the previously disadvantaged in Limpopo Province and to keeping a steady hand on the affairs at the Century Group as Chairman.

The Century Property Developments team will field two cars for Mark Corbett and Juan Mohr and Ernest Corbett and Warwick Goosen in the Mafikeng 500, which gets underway with a 35-kilometre Prologue at 13h00 on Friday, September 24 with the main event starting at 08h00 on Saturday, September 25. The first car is expected at the finish at 14h00.
