A successful shakedown of the five-speed sequential gearbox destined for the Formula Dodge R/T 2000 later this year was completed at Lime Rock Park on Friday afternoon. After running a series of low speed installation laps on the autocross course, test driver R.B. Stiewing ran approximately 10 laps around the full lime Rock Park circuit.

“This new gearbox is really fun to drive,” Stiewing commented following his on track run. “The gear ratios are going to make the car faster pretty much everywhere we race. It’s enabling the powerband to be used better. At Lime Rock for example, we’ve always been running a little bit to high in second gear and too low in third gear. The five-speeds with the closer ratios will eliminate that.”

Stiewing shifted the car both with and without using the clutch, reporting that either way works well. A slight throttle lift is still required when up-shifting without the clutch.

Apart from the usual need to make some fine adjustments to the shift linkage, the gearbox performed flawlessly during the shakedown run. Lap times were not recorded as the intention was solely to run the gearbox in order to check its fit and ensure its compatibility with the rest of the R/T/ 2000 drivetrain.

Testing will begin in earnest at Road America next week, where Stiewing will be charged with running the car in anger for multiple race distances with the goal to analyze performance as well as reliability.

Kieron Salter, Technical Manager of the Reynard Motorsport Special Projects Division, hand carried the prototype gearbox from England, and was present to supervise the initial installation and shakedown
