Auriol leads field after Leg 1

Toyota’'s Didier Auriol has pulled a 17sec lead over the field after Day 1 of the 1998 Catalunya Rally. Auriol took the lead after the first two special stages of today's first leg whilst his main World Championship contenders struggled to find their form.

Formula 2 Citroen driver Jesus Puras remains the biggest threat in second place, while in third place Ford's’ Bruno Thiry edged out 1997 Catalunya Rally flyer and F2 driver Gilles Panizzi. Richard Burns is currently placed in 5th position.
