Johansson storms pole for ALMS finale
It was an exciting day for the Zytek team. Returning as defending champions, Zytek's Stefan Johansson got the job done and took pole in qualifying with a stunning 1.13.731 for Saturday's Monterey Sports Car Championship American Le Mans Series race, at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California. "The car has always been fast and was always capable of pole and this time we finally put it all together, no red flags and a clear track," said Stefan after the session, referring to the close 2nd three weeks ago at the Petit Le Mans race in Road Atlanta, where the Zytek eventually finished 2nd overall. "The team did an excellent job and hopefully we can repeat this feat tomorrow in the race," said Zytek team director Trevor Foster. Zytek owner Bill Gibson added, "This really shows our abilities, this makes 4 poles and 1 second out of 5 races in ALMS."
Co-driver Johnny Mowlem was very pleased as he had set fast times in practice earlier in the day and was very close to Stefan's pace. In only his second race in the Zytek 06S LMP1, he is settling in and getting more comfortable in the car. This 4 hour ALMS race starts Saturday, at 2:45pm Pacific Coast Time.
