NOTES OF INTEREST The final event of the 2001 American Le Mans Series season, Audi presents Petit Le Mans will determine many driving, team and manufacturer titles for the season. It is also a qualifying event for the 2002 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the class winners receiving automatic invitations to compete in the French classic. The first Petit Le Mans in 1998 was the race that became the model for the American Le Mans Series, which started the following year. The race was designed to be a smaller version of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In its three previous runnings, the 1,000-mile mark has been reached by the race winner before the 10-hour maximum time was completed. The fastest was in 1999 at eight hours, 56 minutes, while the inaugural event in 1998 came within 11 minutes of reaching 10 hours. In only four years, Audi presents Petit Le Mans has become one of the most important sports car races in the world, and a stellar field of cars and drivers is expected to compete in this year's version.
