Venturing for the first time onto the Exhibition Place Circuit, 20 Barber Dodge Pro Series set out to learn a new circuit in this morning's 25-minute practice session. American Matt Plumb ended quickest lapping the 1.775-mile temporary street circuit in 1:12.991 sec. Times are expected to come down dramatically as the combination of a new circuit and being the first group to explore the track was not conducive to fast times.
Sepp Koster was second quickest, just two-thousandths of a second behind Plumb. Marc Breuers trailed in third while Akihira Okamoto and Roger Yasukawa rounded out the quickest five.
The session was generally uneventful as all the drivers treaded lightly in the dusty and unfamiliar conditions. Most of the drivers concentrated on simply learning the lines around the circuit and making very few modifications to the Dodge Reynard's set-up.
The first of two qualifying sessions for the seventh round of the 2001 Barber Dodge Pro Series will take place at 4:45 p.m. this afternoon. Final qualifying will get underway on Saturday, July 14 at 12:15 p.m. with the race taking the green flag at 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
