VX Racing's Fabrizio Giovanardi took full advantage in this afternoon's Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship round 20, winning the race and taking another six points out of Jason Plato's points lead.
From fifth on the grid, the Italian forced his Vauxhall Vectra into third by the end of lap one and made short work of Mat Jackson and Gordon Shedden, passing the latter on the outside line into the Esses for the lead on lap seven.
Team-mate Tom Chilton tangled with SEAT's Plato on lap nine of the 21-lap race and both ended on the grass. Chilton recovered to finish eighth.
Following the earlier round 19, race winner Colin Turkington was disqualified after failing the weigh-in. That meant Chilton and Giovanardi were promoted to third and fifth respectively.
The final race at Snetterton will start today at 15:20.
Fabrizio Giovanardi #5
"I'm really happy to get my sixth victory of the year, and the car felt really good. For me it was a very boring race though because the safety car was out twice."
Tom Chilton #7
"I had a very bad start this time, with too much wheel spin, but I was holding myself in a good position and I could have ended up on the podium again. After the spin with Plato my tyres were flat making it difficult to push."
