FIA funds Aussie driver education program

FORMULA 1's GOVERNING BODY FUNDS AUSSIE DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM
Decade of Road Safety kicked off with $125,000 contribution

Formula 1's governing body the FIA has injected $125,000 into the young driver education program 'Ignition' run by The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport. The funding comes as the FIA's Decade of Action for Road Safety begins. This global campaign aims to save five million lives over the next 10 years.

"This funding will help further implement and develop this important education program for pre licenced drivers," says CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos. "CAMS developed the 'Ignition' program to teach youth, aged 12 and up, road safety. It focuses on the attitudes and behaviour of pre-learner drivers, learner drivers and early P-Plate drivers -- the most vulnerable group on Australian roads."

The FIA continues to support CAMS to develop the Ignition Program aimed at promoting safe driving and reducing road deaths and injuries in Australia. FIA President Jean Todt will visit Australia in March 2011.

"The CAMS Ignition program is designed to give young people the chance to drive a vehicle, receive an introduction to motor sport and gain invaluable experience before obtaining their learner's permit and then probationary drivers licence," said CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos. "This initiative will enable young people to develop skills and attitudes which will enhance their knowledge and skill sets to then be used on public roads and in turn make roads safer for all."
