X-Raid Team able to recharge the batteries before final few days
AYOUN-EL-ATROUS, Mauritania -- The X-Raid Team enjoyed a break from competition on Wednesday, after the ASO -- the organisers of the Dakar Rally -- had been forced to amend the route shortly before Christmas under the recommendation of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Instead of returning from the Mali tourist town of Timbuktu on Wednesday, the entire Dakar caravan embarked upon a 280km liaison section to Ayoûn-el-Atroûs and the event will continue as normal towards Kayes. The stages in this region of Mali had been cancelled on safety concerns.
Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah, Jutta Kleinschmidt, Jose-Luis Monterde and Paolo Nobre will now head into Thursday's special stage in fifth, 15th, 17th and 41st overall, with Al-Attiyah and co-driver Alain Guehennec the first crew on the stage behind the motorcycles, courtesy of their superb stage win on Tuesday.
Major support for the X-Raid team comes from Hessen-based sponsor TrekStor, Magna Steyr, BMW Motoren GmbH, Reiger, BF Goodrich, MAN, Sabelt, BBS and KS-Tools.
On Thursday, the schedule returns to its near-original format with a 257km competitive section between Ayoûn-el-Atroûs and Kayes in the Republic of Mali. A 110km liaison heads in a westerly direction to the start of the timed section, which moves across the border. A 117km liaison guides crews into Kayes in the west of Mali.
