NORWALK, OH -- The thaw came a little earlier than the "Iceman" would have liked. Shannon Jenkins, driving the Parson'sthe arctic Brothers-owned, 1941 Willys bowed out in the semifinals to eventual Pro Modified winner Ed Hoover. It was one round earlier than the defending event champion and points leader would have liked.
The Iceman started the weekend sliding into the number two qualifying spot with an elapsed time of 6.368 seconds. This had him facing off against the number seven qualifier Al Billes. Billes was the first challenger to run into the wintery conditions, when Jenkins drove to the victory with a 6.486/215mph while Billes was put into the deep freeze with a 6.797/205.
Jenkins then eliminated McAmis with a 6.44/215, which was than enough to stop McAmis' losing 6.474.
In the semifinals, Jenkins could not squelch a red-hot Ed Hoover. Hoover took this one from the Iceman, but it was close. Hoover won the race with a blistering 6.414 at just over 218 mph to Jenkins' losing 6.460.
The "Iceman" and his Shannon Jenkins Motorsports team will continue their bid for the championship at the IHRA PARTS PRO North American Nationals in Epping, NH., September 10-12. Jenkins, along with each Pro Modified contestant will be afforded two qualifying runs on Friday and two on Saturday. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday.
This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review Magazine.
