Rockingham, NC-Mopar Pro Modified driver, Chip King, qualified in the No. 10 position for the 3rd annual IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals at Rockingham Dragway. Unfortunately, King lost his first round race after a redlight ending his day prematurely.
King opened qualifying in his Indy Cylinder Heads-sponsored Dodge Avenger R/T with an off pace 7.44 at 131 mph. The Semora, NC, resident pushed his supercharged Hemi powerplant to a 6.32 at 220 mph during Friday's evening session to jump into the field in the No. 6 position. King was unable to improve on his 6.32 during Saturday's final pair of qualifying rounds and slipped to the No. 10 spot on the Mopar Pro Modified ladder.
King faced the '63 Corvette of Mitch Stott during the opening round of eliminations on Sunday, with Stott enjoying lane choice. King red lighted his chances of victory after he left the starting line before the flash of green with a .269 reaction time. Stott motored through the quarter mile for the win with a 6.33 at 222 mph, the second quickest run of the first round.
The team will now head to Budd's Creek, Maryland for the IHRA CARQUEST President's Cup Nationals, September 28-30.
