Shreveport Report- Day 1 Qualifying Reports From The IHRA Mopar Parts World Finals

Top Fuel

The Top Fuel dragsters make their qualifying runs on Saturday per IHRA procedures that have limited the nitro-burning dragsters to two qualifying attempts.

Nitro Harley-Davidson

John Mancuso-- Mancuso returned to the site of his quickest-ever run (6.500/215), but didn't fare too well in his first attempt with a 7.535/156.56.

Pro Funny Car

Scott Weney-- Weney didn't open qualifying on a positive note. He missed the set-up for the first session and aborted the run, coasting to a17.89. Weney rebounded in the second session with a 5.972/235.60.

Von Smith-- Smith made his impact known at the start as he hammered out a 5.943/237.38. He did not run in the second session.

Pro Modified

Wally Stroupe -- Stroupe made a decent baseline pass with a 6.498/216.17, which was good enough for the 10th spot. He stepped up in the second session with a 6.488/217.04.

Johnny Rocca/Troy Critchley-- The "Ironhorse" Mercury continued its mastery of the Pro Modified field by securing the top spot with a 6.348/221.63. In the second session, the car drifted out of the groove and he aborted the run, coasting to an11.477/60.65. Critchley retained the top spot.

Mike Castellana-- Castellana had problems right off of the bat and was forced to abort his first qualifying attempt. His fortunes didn't improve in the second session as he aborted the attempt.

Dale Brinsfield-- Brinsfield had every intention of stepping up from his last DNQ performance. He proved to be on the right road in the first session with a 6.522/215.89. During the second session, he remained consistent with a 6.528/216.62.

Shannon Jenkins-- Last season, Jenkins left Shreveport with the world record intact. He stepped to the front of the line for nitrous-injected entries with a 6.406/217.70, good enough for the second spot. His first attempt was tough to outdo and he slowed down with a 6.463/216.66.

Ed Hoover -- Fresh off of his second win, Hoover was respectable in the first qualifying session with a 6.432/218.48. He stepped up during the next qualifying attempt with a 6.366/220.04.

Tommy Mauney -- Mauney seemed to have previous problems solved in the first session as he stormed to a 6.422/219.47. This was good enough for the third position. During the second session, he failed to improve with a 6.445/220.48.

Steve Vick- Vick wasn't looking to set the Pro Modified field on fire in the first session, but he did want a good enough baseline to earn a berth in the field. He gained his wish with a 6.477/218.16. The second session afforded him some improvement with a 6.410/221.09.

Pro Stock

John Montecalvo-- Montecalvo opened qualifying with an astounding 6.711/207.43, which was the quickest lap of the first session. He stepped up considerably with a 6.688/207.24 during the second session. However, this improvement afforded him the second quickest qualifier on the day.

Charlie Hunt Racing (Tom Lee/Floyd Cheek)- Lee was the quicker of the two Team Hunt drivers. Fresh off of the new class record that he set in Maryland, Lee stepped forward in the first session with a 6.723/206.99. Cheek was not as fortunate as he cranked out a 6.815/205.60. During the second session, Lee remained the quicker of the two with a 6.750/207.40. Cheek pulled closer to his teammate with a 6.753/205.13.

Super Eliminator

Larry Snyder-- Snyder didn't offer up his best effort in the first qualifying session with a 6.378/213.40. He stepped up in the second session with a respectable 6.243/217.35.

Mark McElwee -- McElwee got off to a tough start as he broke the transmission on the starting line and sat motionless after nailing the throttle. He corrected the problem for the second session and cranked out a 6.461/207.30.
