Valencia: Pirelli race report

PIRELLI-EQUIPPED CARS IN THE TOP SIX POSITIONS OF THE GT2 CLASS AT VALENCIA 1000 KM

Works Porsche of Lieb-Pompidou triumphs after hard fought duel to the finish.

Valencia, May 7, 2007 After an excellent one-two finish for Pirelli-equipped GTC Ferrari 430's at Monza, the Italian tire manufacturer was once again at the forefront in Valencia. Only this time, it was the factory Porsche 997 GT3-RSR driven by Lieb-Pompidou shod with Pirelli PZero Racing tires that won the GT2 class at the Valencia 1000 KM round two of the Le Mans series.

The victorious Porsche finished in front of two Ferraris, the second of which (Scuderia Villorba) was also equipped with PZero Racing tires. This race, recognized as more challenging than Monza, was a tremendous accomplishment for Pirelli as six of the top seven GT2 finishers were fitted with Italian rubber. The Lieb-Pompidou Porsche 997 GT3-RST was always amongst the front-runners before making its decisive move in the last two hours to thwart the two Ferraris and another Porsche also shod with PZero Racing tires piloted by Werner-Ehret-Nielsen (Farnbacher Racing).

Pirelli Competizioni director Paul Hembery commented: "Our success at the tricky Valencia circuit underlies the strengths of our PZero Racing tires, which carried the Porsche 997 GT3-RSR to victory in extremely difficult conditions today. Third place for the Villorba Ferrari also demonstrates that our tires are well-suited to very different types of cars."
