F1 Miami GP Live Commentary and Updates – FP1 & Sprint Qualifying

Unnoticed in the melee at the back, Norris went fastest in the closing stages with a 1m27.939, leading Piastri in a McLaren 1-2.
The bottom five are Gasly, Zhou, Bottas, Sargeant and Albon.
And it gets worse for Albon, who's best time has been deleted. He had been P16 but is now last.
Gasly is yet to take the chequered flag but is on a slow lap and pits, confirming the end of his afternoon.
Albon is out, Bottas pits and is out, Sargeant is out.
Ricciardo improves to move out of the drop zone, climbing to P9.
Zhou is out as he pits while in P16.

An incident between Bottas and Piastri will be investigated after the session. The Sauber driver pulled into the path of his McLaren counterpart into Turn 1.

There are no flies on Leclerc, as he goes to P3. With three minutes left on the clock, that could be job done with the Ferrari driver nine-tenths clear of the drop.
Magnussen, currently P13 has reported being blocked by a Sauber in the tight Turns 13-14-15 complex, but it's very difficult to see where Zhou could have gone there.
In the drop zone right now are Zhou, Sainz, Hulkenberg, Albon and Bottas.

With half the upgrades of McLaren team-mate Norris, Piastri is flying and goes second, 0.038s back from Verstappen.

Sergio Perez now takes to the top, but is immediately bested by Max Verstappen who crosses the line to set a 1m28.601s.
The initial times are coming in and Stroll heads Aston Martin team-mate Alonso, who looked like he scraped the wall at Turn 16.
After saying that, a serious moment of oversteer after getting on the Turn 7 kerbing ruins his first attempt. At least it's still pointing in the right direction this time.
After losing a lot of time earlier, Leclerc is the first driver to take to the track, catching up on learning his way around. It should be remembered that he took pole for the first Miami GP, so is no slouch around here.
So, for those who are new here or need reminding, drivers must use new medium tyres in both SQ1 and SQ2, but any set of mediums that they want in SQ3.

Verstappen was quickest in the FP1 and, if the season so far is anything to go by, is the favourite to take pole. But beyond that, it really is anyone's guess.
We're now just five minutes from sprint qualifying getting under way.

The great thing about the upcoming session, is that we have no idea what is going to happen, with a red flag in FP1 limiting the running - especially for Leclerc, whos spin early on caused his retirement and the aforementioned stoppage.
Good evening and welcome to Miami for sprint qualifying. That's correct, there is no second practice this weekend, as F1 is once again racing to the alternate format.
With that, we'll take a short breather ahead of sprint race qualifying which starts at 9:30pm BST. Go well!

A small shoutout goes to Alpine, with Ocon and Gasly ending practice inside the top 10. If they can take that into sprint race qualifying later that's a serious step in performance.

A nightmare session for Leclerc then due to his early spin and getting stranded at Turn 16. Everyone else got a minimum of 21 laps in, while the Ferrari driver got in three-and-a-half.
Practice starts are the final order of the session - the only time the drivers will get to do that on the grid before the sprint race.
So, Verstappen ends practice on top from Piastri, Sainz, Russell and Stroll. Five different teams inside the top five.
The chequered flag is out as Stroll goes fifth fastest. Everyone just about squeezes in a quali sim despite the early red flag in this session.
A flurry of faster lap times are coming in now; as Piastri goes second from Sainz in third and Russell in fourth.

Verstappen, on older softs, goes quickest despite locking up at Turn 17. He posts a 1m28.595s to go quickest by a quarter of a second.

Despite that small pace drop getting by Zhou, Perez still goes fastest with a 1m28.868s - half a tenth up on Russell.
Perez winds up for a qualifying-style lap but almost immediately has to back out as he reaches Zhou on a slow lap at Turn 2.
Verstappen reports he's overheated his softs so cannot extract the peak performance. Meanwhile Hamilton goes third fastest, just a tenth of a second off Russell's top time.
