Formula One teams took to the track for the first time today in Barcelona following the mandatory three month break. Williams test driver Antonio Pizzonia topped the time sheets, clocking a best of 1:20.033 and completing 66 laps of the 4.73 km circuit despite a spin. The Brazilian was closely challenged by McLaren's Alexander Wurz who set a time of 1:20.088 in his team's first outing on Michelin tires.
David Coulthard finished the day third fastest in the other McLaren, recording a lap half a second off the lead pace. Ralf Schumacher and Marc Gene rounded out the top five for the Williams BMW squad.
Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine was sixth in an updated 2001 car, with the team holding off on testing the brand new R3. His teammate, Pedro de la Rosa, finished ninth and last with a lap time two seconds adrift.
British American Racing were satisfied with the first proper run of the BAR004 2002 chassis, completing a total of 55 laps between drivers Anthony Davidson and Olivier Panis. The two seventh and eighth quickest, respectively.
More teams are scheduled to participate during tomorrow's sessions.
