According to an article in one of the daily newspapers today, Formula One world Champion Michael Schumacher has signed a deal with the Ferrari team for the 1996 season.
A deal reputed to be worth in the region of $24 million (?15.4 million) a year was struck sometime last week at Marenello. The news comes directly from Fiat chairman Giovanni Agnelli. However, Schumacher himself denied any such claim saying only: 'I have not decided anything at all.'
If Schumacher does go to Ferrari then he is expected to partner Berger. French driver Jean Alesi has made no secret of his dislike of a partnership with the world champion and is rumured to be moving to Benetton-Renault, thus trading places with Schumacher.
Meanwhile Damon Hill may follow Nigel Mansell in moving to The Indy Car series. Hill has been offered a drive at the Newman-Haas team for around ?3 million. Damon must respond before September to take up on the offer.
In Hungary yesterday Damon responded to media attention: "I can only say that I have received one or two interesting phone calls this week. Without being more specific, it's good to be recognised. My priority is Formula One as I have unfinished business here and it is the pinnacle. My ambition is to be world champion."
Whatever Hill decides to do, this latest turn of events in the Formula One silly season can only be good for Hill's self esteem and add a boost to his competitive drive to the World championship.
