KL Minardi's new signing Mark Webber has said that his goal this year is to score points for the team. Minardi haven't gained any Championship points since 1999 and struggled to even qualify in some of last season's races. Webber is hoping to put the team in a better position and is looking forward to his debut in his home country at Melbourne, Australia in four weeks time.

“ I'd love to get some good results under my belt, and if we can score a point this year, that's my immediate goal," he said. "And if we can have one or two teams behind us at the end of the year, that would be absolutely fantastic. I know we're not going to get points on our own merit. We're going to need some reliability on our part, a lot of luck and a fair amount of attrition to get into the top six. But I want to put the team in the best position possible to score a point.”

Webber was confirmed as partner to Alex Yoong for Minardi in 2002 on 28th January. He previously raced in British Formula Ford and Formula 3 and despite nearly having to quit due to lack of funding he attracted the attention of Mercedes boss Norbert Haug who signed him up for the AMG Mercedes sportscar team. He went on to compete in European Formula 3000 with Paul Stoddart's European Formula Racing and International Formula 3000 with Benetton's Super Nova Racing, also acting as their official Formula One test driver for 2001.
