3 February 2005, Donnington - Autosport's "One to Watch" driver James Wingfield tested two Formula BMW cars this week in preparation for the 2005 Formula BMW UK Championship. After posting lap times very close to the Mallory Park lap record on his first outing in a wings and slicks car, Paul Leach of Panther motorsport said "James shows a lot of promise and could be a front runner in the BMW series".
The Imperial College Engineering student then went on to surprise a few of last years competitors at Donnington on Thursday by becoming the pace setter again to the delight of his new sponsors, KP Renewables Plc, and the Pegasus race team who prepared the car. David White of Pegasus pointed out that after just 3 hours driving James' times around the damp Donnington circuit would have put him at the front of the grid in last September's Formula BMW UK race.
James sponsors are hoping to finalize arrangements with David White of Pegasus to start their 2005 Championship assault at Thruxton on 18 February, the first official Formula BMW UK test day.
