Formula Ford Zwartkops round 7 summary

Formula Ford Championship leader Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) and Brett Maybery (Playstation2 Van Diemen) shared wins in round seven of the Vodacom Power Tour at the Zwartkops Raceway west of Pretoria yesterday.

Wolk looked set to continue his winning form when he qualified in pole position, but in the Saturday morning warm-up he made an error and crashed his car. While the team worked frantically to repair the damage, he was forced to sit out race one as the repairs could not be completed in time.

That left Maybery, making one of his rare appearances in the series, to take the win from fifth on the grid. He was chased hard by David Veringa (Sabat Batteries / Playstation 2 Van Diemen), with the latter finishing just 0.3sec in arrears.

Jayde Kruger (Wap Alto Mygale) led initially from third on the grid, but he was passed by both Maybery and Veringa during the race, and had to settle for third.

Marc Murray (Rotax Max Challenge Van Diemen) continued his recent upturn in form with a solid fourth place ahead of Leslie Reynolds (Wap Alto Mygale) and Sean Petterson (Lesdonnees Mygale).

Donovan Howard (Associated Auto / Wap Alto Mygale), the overall winner of the last round, qualified third on the grid, but went off the circuit early in the race and finished as the last runner six laps in arrears.

Wolk took up his position at the head of the field for race two and made no mistake as he led from lights to flag for a 1.5 sec victory over Maybery. Kruger pushed Maybery hard this time around to finish half a second behind in third.

Veringa dropped off the pace to finish almost five seconds behind Kruger, while Murray and Armani Jamrozinski (Diesel / Pilot Freight Van Diemen) kept pressure on Veringa throughout the race, with less than two seconds covering the three drivers after 15 laps.

Despite not contesting the first race, Wolk extended his championship lead thanks to Stevie Morris, who is no longer contesting the series, remaining his closest challenger. Veringa once again moved past Howard for third place, while Kruger closed to within one point of Howard.
