Mid-Ohio preview

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 4, 2001) -- The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series will travel to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio to contest the ConAgra Foods U.S. Road Racing Classic, June 8-10. Several Ohio natives will be vying for a spot in Victory Lane as they race around the 2.258-mile road course.

Highlighting the pack of racers will be the Field trio from Dublin, Ohio. Twin-brothers Jon and Joe Field are co-owners of Intersport Racing, which runs two cars in the SportsRacing Prototype class of the Rolex Series. Jon is joined by Englishman Oliver Gavin in the #37 Judd-powered Lola, while Joe shares driving duties with Jon's 17-year-old son Clint, a junior at Dublin Coffman High School, in the #28 Ford-engined Riley & Scott. The pair of cars is sponsored by the popular nightclub chain Banana Joe's, which the brothers also co-own.

Also competing in this weekend's ConAgra Foods U.S. Road Racing Classic will be Cincinnati-resident Larry Schumacher, who is fresh off his first victory of the season at the Lime Rock Grand Prix. The victory increased Schumacher's lead in the GTS-class driver standings from one point to seven points over rival Chris Bingham, of Kirkland, Wash.

A pair of Columbus residents, Dick Greer and John Fergus will share driving duties in the #82 Wendy's Corvette. The two will compete against fellow-Ohioan Tim Cowen, of Ashland, in the #71 Cowen Racing Mustang.

The racing excitement will get underway at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Friday with practice sessions. Qualifying for the ConAgra Foods U.S. Road Racing Classic will be held on Saturday, with the race beginning at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are still on sale for this weekend's event.
