Phoenix, Ariz. (April 21, 2000) - James Weaver lapped the 1.51-mile road course at Phoenix International Raceway at an average speed of 100.081. Weaver was awarded the pole for the Sun Automotive 200 after the Team Risi Competizone entry was disqualified for a mechanical irregularity following post qualifying inspection. The Dyson Racing Team entry piloted by Weaver set a track record of 54.316 secs. in the process of claiming fast time in the first round of qualifying for the second Grand American Road Racing Association event of 2000.
The Grand-Am series will next be heading to Homestead-Miami Speedway May 5-7 for the Grand-Am Miami 250.
Leading the charge in the GTO class in Phoenix qualifying was Terry Borcheller in the Saleen-Allen Speedlab entry. Borcheller will start fifth overall in a Ford Saleen. In the SportsRacer Lights class Martin Snow led the class in a Nissan-Lola. In the AGT class the Spirit of Daytona team took the first in class in qualifying and will start ninth overall. Finally in the GTU class, Phoenix, Ariz. Native Darren Law and G&W Motorsports took first and class in will start tenth overall.
The Sun Automotive 200 will begin at 7:30 p.m. local, on Saturday, April 22.
