Wickens shines in RotaxMax at Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship at Cameron Motorsports Park

HAMILTON, ONTARIO - Team Hurricane driver, 15 year old Robert Wickens made his Senior class debut in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship Presented by Toronto Star Wheels this past weekend at Cameron Motorsports Park - Team Hurricane's home track - in Hamilton, Ontario. Wickens left the event with a pole, and two podium finishes in RotaxMax Senior. "This was a good start, but not as good as I had hoped for after qualifying on the pole," Wickens said. "I'm sure once we get more miles on this Hurricane chassis, things will be even better."

Wickens got a good dose of racing luck in Formula Senior. "In short, it was a disaster," Wickens said of his maiden Formula Senior outing for Team Hurricane. "The Hurricane chassis and team worked hard all weekend, but racing luck just jumped up and bit us this weekend."

It started on the first round of two Formula Senior rounds on Sunday. At the start, after qualifying sixth, a mere .397 of a second off the pole, Wickens made a great start. The driver in front of him didn't. "I took off and he didn't move, so I had to go in the grass. Jonathon Fecteau hit me when my Hurricane kart dug in the dirt. Once I got back on the track I was at the back, and I hadn't even made it to the first turn. When I did make it to the first turn, I was behind Ward [Imrie] and he hit the guy in front of him, and I hit Ward, which spun him around - not exactly the start to my Formula Senior career I was hoping for."

Wickens made his way up to 13th by the time the checkered fell. In Round 2, Wickens started 10th and put in a strong drive to finish a very respectable sixth. "It was difficult to race my way forward," Wickens said. "But I am sure we'll be strong at Barrie, now that I know just how difficult this class is. "

Wickens will now jump into his Cameron Motorsports/Shift Ford Taurus for Round 3 of the Ontario Pro Challenge Series, which will be held on June 5th at Mosport.
