Helmets With Counterfeit Snell 2000 Identification

09.02.2008 -- Competitors, tech inspectors and dealers should be aware that there are some helmets on the market that have decals stating that they are Snell 2000 certified when they are not. The bogus "certification" is located on a small decal at the outside, bottom, rear of the helmet. These helmets are not certified for use in WKA competition.

To be sure a helmet is approved for use at WKA sanctioned events or at WKA Master Tracks, look for a Snell or SFI sticker inside of the helmet. It will be attached to the inside of the shell under the lining. Sometimes the stickers are difficult to locate, and locating it may require dislocating the lining, but if the helmet is Snell or SFI certified, it will be there. If it is not there, but you are sure the helmet is legal, return it to the manufacturer for a sticker.

WKA Tech Inspectors have also noticed that out of date helmets are still appearing in pre race tech inspection. Just as a reminder, here are the approved helmets and their certification expiry dates.

SA and M 2000: 12/20/2009
SA and M 2005: 12/20/2014
K 2005: 12/20/2014
CMS 2007: 12/20/2016
CMR 2007: 12/20/2016

SFI Specifications
24.1 (youth helmet): 12/20/2012
31.2a: 12/20/2012
41.2a: 12/20/2012
24.1/2005 (youth helmet): 12/20/2014
31.1/2005: 12/20/2014
41.1/2005: 12/20/2014

Note: Helmets with any Snell certification older than 2000 are no longer legal.
