Brainerd, MN August 15, 2003 Friday:

The racetrack itself was the key factor in Friday's qualifying at The 22nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. The new concrete surface and taconite mixed asphalt had qualifiers in all pro categories concerned about how to set-up for runs for the first qualifying session.

Matco Tools Suzuki rider Craig Treble and team took the safe approach and spent the session scrubbing in a new tire, and collecting data for the second run of the day. That strategy paid off in Fridays second qualifying session when the Matco Tools Bike ran a 7.267, fastest of the session and placing the team in the No. 2 spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

"We figured there was no use in guessing at the track, and we also had to run a new tire sometime in qualifying, so we just decided to do it right away and concentrate on the afternoon session" said Treble. "If we can pull off the run we were expecting today in one of the two sessions tomorrow, we may be able to improve again in qualifying here in Brainerd."
