BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 13, 2004) - Ron Capps, a two-time Funny Car winner at Brainerd International Raceway, drove his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 7 qualifying position Friday at the Minnesota facility.
Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, used a Roland Leong tune-up to record a run of 4.907 seconds at 310.84 mph in his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper to claim the No. 7 qualifying spot following two of four scheduled qualifying attempts at B.I.R. On Friday's opening pass, the green Skoal Racing Chevy was too aggressive, forcing Capps to lift and coast to a run of 6.038 at 155.29.
"That second run was a good pass," Capps said. "We got after it a little bit on the first run and the track was suspect. We were early in the session and we had to get the car down the track, so we're happy with a 4.90. We're in the top half of the field and that makes Roland (Leong) happy."
Capps, one of 14 drivers to have earned victories in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories, aims to move up in the Funny Car order when qualifying resumes with sessions at noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14.
