Chicago qualifying interrupted

SALT LAKE UT - SUMMIT FastNews - With racers and fans scurrying for cover, a large storm cell moved into the Salt Lake area, bringing with it lightning, thunder, and lots of that wet stuff that makes drag racing impossible. Further qualifying action and activities have been canceled till tomorrow. In Federal Mogul Dragster Rick Santo's ran as he predicted: "We think given the right conditions, we can maybe run in the 5.6-second range." That translated to an on track performance of 5.655 248.20, a new track ET record. Melanie Troxel in the In-N-Out Burgers A fuel dragster set a new speed record with a 5.720 252.59 mph run. Pete Swayne and Randy Goodwin have added some new artwork to their Firebird, and lead the field of nine funny cars after one round of qualifying. Pete ran 5.930 242.32 mph in the right lane earlier, the only Funny Car in the fives so far this weekend. Andy Manna is currently holding down the top spot in Comp, he ran a -.572 8.878 on the 9.45 index in D/EA in his 1990 Pontiac. Tomorrow's schedule calls for one more round of qualifying and the completion of racing for the Federal Mogul classes. They will run one more round of qualifying at 12:30 pm, then run eliminations at 5:00, 7:30, and 9:00 PM. The other classes will run their elimination rounds on Sunday.
