CLERMONT, Ind. - The first run of a race can often be the toughest of the race. It forces you to make an educated guess for a tune-up, rather than compiled data as the rest of the runs of a race are. Such was the case for NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver David Wells during today's first qualifying session at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, ran an elapsed time of 5.690 seconds at 253.33 mph to place him sixth after the first day of qualifying in the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster.
"The track was a little bit slippery about 40 ft. out there," said Wells. "We just had the thing kind of lazy, we just need to get after the motor a little bit and hop it up. When we get more rubber on the track, it will start coming around."
Wells feels the team was not aggressive enough today and plans to step it up for tomorrow's two qualifying sessions.
"We're just going to try to move things around a little bit," explained Wells. "We're going to hop the motor up a little bit. We want to move up in the field a little bit."
Qualifying resumes tomorrow with sessions at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
