Wells looking to rebound in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - After a fairly disappointing weekend in Orlando last weekend, defending NHRA Division 5 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion David Wells is hoping to get things going in the right direction with a strong showing at this weekend's Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida. Wells feels that the usual good air and track conditions Gainesville Raceway is known for will be a key ingredient to his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team's success.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, qualified No. 3 at last weekend's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Orlando, Fla., but lost in the first round with a .396 redlight, just .004 of a second shy of a green light. Undeterred, Wells and team have put that behind them, and are looking forward to the opportunity to redeem themselves this weekend, and may have a few new tricks up their sleeve.

"We are trying some new engine stuff here and there," stated Wells. "We experimented with it a little bit last weekend, and it seemed to be working pretty well. That's why we are looking forward to this weekend. Hopefully the weather cooperates, and we can get right into the 5.30's at 260 mph. If we can get the car to cooperate, I think we can go right down the track."

Not only is the Blue Bunny/ "Plain Vanilla" team on a mission of redemption this weekend, but hope to make a strong showing to help their national points for this year as well.

"We always shoot for a high national points standing," said Wells. "I don't know why, but for some reason we always get into a slump because some area of the car doesn't want to cooperate. We have a couple areas of the car we are really going to concentrate on this year, and hopefully keep things going right. We really want to keep things on track this year. We always try to make predictions for top ten stuff, but it never seems to work out. So this year I'm just going to go as it comes."

Qualifying begins Friday for the Top Alcohol Dragsters, with one final qualifying session and round one on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for daily recaps of the action from Gainesville.
