RECORDS FALL AS GOODYEAR COLLECTS FIVE WINS AT HOUSTON
HOUSTON, Texas (April 5, 2006) -- Robert Hight set a track record and John Force broke it, but neither driver won in the O'Reilly Spring NHRA Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Instead, it was Ron Capps that led a phalanx of five drivers racing on Goodyear tires to victory.
The weekend's totals bring Goodyear's season victory total to 22 in NHRA national events. That total is the best among tiremakers.
Racing in the Nitro Funny Car class, Hight was clocked at 4.754 seconds in the first round of qualifying to establish a new HRP record. But Force, the grand champion of Funny Car racing, went even quicker in the second round and set the bar at 4.695 seconds.
Capps began the Houston race with the points lead and fattened his advantage over the rest of the class by beating Bob Gilbertson in the final.
Brandon Bernstein's Top Fuel victory was his first of the '06 campaign, but his second in two seasons at Houston. Bernstein beat Melanie Troxel in the final round. Troxel has made it to the final round in five straight races.
Mike Edwards' victory in Pro Stock came at the expense of Jim Yates. The win was the first for Edwards since 2002.
Bill Reichert's victory leaves Goodyear-shod racers perfect in the Top Alcohol Dragster class this season. He beat Steve Torrence in the final round. There were 19 cars in the highly competitive field.
Kebin Kinsley collected the first national win of his career when he beat Mick Snyder in Top Alcohol Funny Car.
