CONWAY WINS TAD FINAL AT NORWALK
NORWALK, Ohio (June 29, 2008) -- Apparently, Tom Conway hasn't lost anything since winning two National Hot Rod Association national championships.
Conway, the Top Alcohol Dragster champion in 1989 and 1994, raced for the first time in more than a dozen years at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.
And won.
Conway, a 61-year-old resident of Bixby, Ok, drove his dragster to victory in the final round. His 5.321-second pass in the semifinal round was the best of the weekend in the category.
"We were just trying to repeat (be consistent) and not make any mistakes," Conway said of the weekend. "We have 25 runs on those rear tires."
Conway's first victory in 13 seasons came on a set of Goodyear D1230 rear drive tires. Goodyear has been the most effective tiremaker among TAD competitors for several seasons. Conway's victory at Norwalk was Goodyear's seventh TAD win, without a loss, in national competition this season.
Defending national TAD champion Bill Reichert, another Goodyear loyalist, was the top qualifier in the category at Norwalk.
The TAD category is the fastest of the NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsman racers.
Drivers racing on Goodyear tires advanced to the final round of three sportsman categories.
