CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES PENNZOIL NATIONALS NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK Saturday, March 21, 1998
PRO STOCK TRUCK
JERRY HAAS, CHEVY S-10, and JOHN LINGENFELTER, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVY S-10, were both eliminated in the first round today -- Lingenfelter by Bob Pannella Jr.'s Chevy S-10 (7.803/170.13 to 9.991/97.84), and Haas by Roy Hill's Ford (7.787/171.03 to 8.330/163.51). Both teams continue to have "teething" problems as development progresses on the Chevy S-10s with the new '98 noses.
Two of Jerry Haas' Chevy S-10 chassis remain in the field, No. 1 qualifier Larry Kopp and Randy Daniels, who face each other in the semi-finals. The final will be a Chevy vs. Dodge match-up as Dodge drivers David Nickens and Todd Patterson face off in their semi-finals.
LINGENFELTER: "We blew a head gasket. Because of the turbulence we were having with the scoop, it makes the engine run lean. We knew it was a possibility (that we would lose a head gasket). The gasket was already leaking." NOW THAT YOU HAVE ONE EVENT UNDER YOUR BELT, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PRO STOCK TRUCK SERIES: "I love it. The competition is what it's all about. We're struggling, but it will come around. It's just disappoiting to do this poorly and be this far off base. We'll test here on Monday."
HAAS: "We closed up two spark plugs in the water box. So we're going to stay and test and figure this thing out. We have the power to do it, we just need to get the combination of air and fuel right. I'm down that we lost. My heart fell to the floorboards when I was in the water box when it dropped a cylinder. I staged with Roy hoping he'd red-light, but he didn't. We could have out-run him, but it wasn't meant to be. I couldn't do anything about the spark plugs closing down on me.
