CLERMONT, Ind. - NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Jay Meyer currently sits second after one day of qualifying at this weekend's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park. Meyer ran an elapsed time of 5.592 seconds at 252.90 mph.
"They repaved the track," said Meyer. "We went out and took a look at it, and it looked really good, so we got really aggressive with it. It came real close to smoking the tires, and I had to pedal it and short shift it, and it still ran a .59. We're pretty encouraged with that."
Meyer feels there is plenty of room for improvement for tomorrow's two qualifying sessions.
"We can calm it down and run a low .50, maybe a .40," stated Meyer. "The track is good, it just got hot on us. The air is really bad, the corrected altitude is close to 4000 ft. We have to keep the motor up, but calm it down at the same time, so we just have to play with it and see what it will do."
Qualifying resumes tomorrow with sessions at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
