Von Smith Reaches The Semis At Indy
INDIANAPOLIS - They say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. But, those that know Federal Mogul Funny Car racer Von Smith, were looking for an amendment to the lore after the Jensen Car Audio-sponsored Pontiac pushed his entry to a semi-final finish at the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis.
Smith, 38, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., felt that he had a very respectable first Indy outing.
"This was an incredible day for the Jensen Audio hot rod," explained Smith, who made the jump over to the NHRA side after three IHRA World Championships. "We were a little concerned after qualifying, but we forgot about it when we come to the line. This was great and I have enjoyed myself."
Smith began from the fifth spot with a 5.832, 246.17.
Smith blasted by Vern Moats in the opening round with a holeshot and backed it up with a 5.779, 246.80. Moats, gave it a valiant effort with a 5.792, 248.61.
After having a good night's rest to think on the second round, Smith waltzed by Fred Hagen in the quarter-finals with a 5.758, 247.47.
His race day ended with a 5.813, 247.47 and quicker reaction time, which was no match for Frank Manzo's entry.
