Memphis: David wells preview

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells will be looking for more than just a win, but redemption during this weekend's Autozone Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Memphis Motorsports Park, just outside of Memphis, Tenn.

Wells, of LeMars, Iowa, had a tough second round loss to Keith Stark to a holeshot during last weekend's Advance Auto Parts Nationals in Topeka, Kan. Wells made the quickest Blown Alcohol Dragster pass of eliminations in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" entry at an elapsed time of 5.49 seconds that just wasn't enough to catch Stark's holeshot 5.52. Wells looks to erase that memory with a win in Memphis.

"After that 5.49, we have got back to a good baseline again," said Wells. "We're going to make a few changes for Memphis, but basically set the car up the same, except a little softer during the first run to get it down the track."

With tuning assistance from two time World Champion Tom Conway, Wells hopes to get close to the 5.40 zone in Memphis.

Wells said, "We should be able to get pretty close to the 5.40's. Normally the track is not quite as good as Topeka, but it's close. Low .50's and maybe some high .40's are what we are looking for."

"A lot of what will happen this weekend depends on the weather. There's a lot of good A/Fuel cars that will be there this weekend that can run a number in really good weather. It's going to be a challenge no matter what."
