Memphis: Tommy Johnson Jr Friday summary

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Aug. 20, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. blasted his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the provisional No. 2 qualifying spot Friday at Memphis Motorsports Park after recording a run of 4.905 seconds at 304.80 mph.

Johnson used a Mike Green tune-up to power to the 4.905, 304.80 run on Friday's second qualifying session under the lights at Memphis Motorsports Park. On the opening run of the weekend, Johnson's Chevy flopper overpowered the race track under the hot, muggy summer conditions in western Tennessee.

"No. 2 is a big boost to this crew," Johnson said. "We've shown signs of being able to do that, now we just need to capitalize on it. I was worried because we spun the tires in the first session. For no apparent reason, good things happen to me at this track. They guys worked for that run, they did a great job. I knew I liked night racing."

Johnson looks to move up to the No. 1 position when nitro qualifying continues at 3:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. Johnson qualified second at the St. Louis event in late June; he last qualified No. 1 in 2001 (Pomona 1).
