Mid-Michigan Motorplex next stop for Coughlin
STANTON, Mich. -- JEG'S driver Mike Coughlin plans to celebrate the upcoming Independence Day holiday by racing his Chevy Cobalt at this weekend's North Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex. After racing in the Super Comp category at the last few events, Coughlin will return to the Top Sportsman division in Stanton with his low 7-second, 190-mph racer.
"Super Comp has always been my bread and butter class but I'm really excited about racing in Top Sportsman and I plan to focus on that class for the foreseeable future," said Coughlin. "I built this new Cobalt specifically for Top Sportsman and even though it makes a competitive Super Comp car, I believe it will be most effective in Top Sportsman."
After participating in a couple of test sessions and a handful of North Central Division events, Coughlin feels comfortable in his new environment and now believes he is prepared to start winning races.
"Overall, I feel much more comfortable in the car now than I did when we first debuted it in April," said Coughlin. "We also corrected a minor brake issue, and that should help me be more consistent in the way I stage the car. So far, I've only run one Top Sportsman race in Division 3 and that is a second round finish, so there is still plenty of time to make a run at the championship."
Top Sportsman qualifying for the Mid-Michigan Motorplex Lucas Oil Series event will be held a 12:30, 5, and 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 1 and final eliminations are scheduled for noon on Sunday, July 2.
