KALAMAZOO'S ARNOLD, FREELAND'S WENZEL SCORE WINS IN NHRA LUCAS OIL SERIES
STANTON, Mich. -- After two days of racing at Mid-Michigan Motorplex, Jerry Arnold of Kalamazoo and Ben Wenzel of Freeland lead the march to the winner's circle for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Drivers in eight categories are racing for valuable points toward divisional and national championships.
Former division and national titlist Arnold was the event's No. 2 qualifier in Comp Eliminator and was able to make his way around Robert Bailey of Wabash, Ind., in the final. This marked Arnold's first win of 2008.
Wenzel is also a former division champion and he is the defending event winner. Wenzel earned the win in Stock Eliminator as he wheeled his '67 Camaro to the win over Chris Stephenson of Brownsburg, Ind., in a '74 Buick.
Super Stock winner Ricky Decker, Charlestown, Ind., took his '94 Camaro to the winner's circle by beating Jeff Dona of Gordonville, Mo., and his '69 Camaro. The win in Super Comp went to Rod Finney, Greenwood, Ind., who drove his dragster to the win over Barry Ryan, Farming Hills, Mich. Larry Roedel, Evansville, Ind., took his Super Gas roadster to the winner's circle after ousting Steven Hoyt, Ft. Wayne, Ind., in a '63 Corvette, in the final. Needham, Ind., Super Street racer Ricky Shipp outpaced Dale McClenaghan, Livonia, Mich., for the win and the win in the Dart Top Sportsman class went to Brian Stultz, New Lebanon, Ohio, who beat out Daniel Howorth, Yorkville, Ill., in the last round. Jeremy McCormick took home the hardware in the Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster class by beating Jerry Powell II of Kokomo, Ind.
In the exhibition Pro Stock Snowmobile class, a couple of Minnesota residents squared off in the final. In the end, Ron Bray of Anoka got the win over Lindstrom's Mike Golaski.
NHRA North Central division racers head to Ohio for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. National Trail Raceway in Hebron will host, July 25-27.
