Capps Races To First-Round Finish at Pomona Finals
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2004) - Ron Capps raced his Don Prudhomme-owned green Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car to a first round effort during the 40th annual Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals Sunday at Pomona Raceway.
Capps used the second best reaction time of the opening round (.069) to take the early lead over first round opponent Tony Pedregon before the motor on Capps' Chevy flopper let loose allowing the fellow Chevy driver to pass by and earn the round win. Capps slowed to a run of 5.184 seconds at 227.11 mph, while Pedregon powered to the second quickest elapsed time of the first round stopping the timers in 4.766 at 323.08.
"The car left great and then it made a move to the right," Capps said. "I could see Tony (Pedregon) outside my window and the car was spinning the tires so I just shut off. We had a little fire, but it was just oil burning. We're disappointed because we ran a 4.79 during the first qualifying pass on Saturday during the day and felt we had a good shot today."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 45th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals, Feb. 10-13, 2005, at Pomona Raceway.
