Pomona II: Ron Capps Thursday summary

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2004) - Ron Capps and the green Skoal Racing team aim to bounce back on Friday at Pomona Raceway after missing the cut for the 16-car field on the opening day of qualifying for the Auto Club of So. Calif. Finals on Thursday afternoon.

The tune-up on Capps' Chevy flopper was too aggressive, causing the car to spin the tires and slow to a pass of 9.140 seconds at 96.57 mph placing Capps 20th in the Funny Car order with three qualifying sessions remaining. There are 26 Funny Cars attempting to make the 16-car field this weekend at Pomona.

"We knew we'd have to run a mid-4.70 to be in the top five," Capps said. "We shot for it and overpowered the race track. It's kind of neat at the two Pomona races because you have one run on Thursday and Friday, and with the cloud cover and cool conditions, it's like having two night sessions. We still have three more runs. At this point, we're not worried."

Capps, a former winner at Pomona Raceway, looks to move into the Funny Car order when qualifying resumes on Friday at 3 p.m. There also are two sessions scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Pomona Raceway.
