POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2004) -- Ron Capps made his second pass behind the wheel of the new Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car body Friday as qualifying for the Winternationals continued at Pomona Raceway.
Capps blasted his John Stewart-tuned green Skoal Racing Chevy to a performance of 4.936 seconds at 281.29 mph, improving over his previous 5.136, 228.04 effort. Capps is 10th of the 23 Funny Cars attempting to make the show for Sunday's final eliminations.
"John (Stewart) and Todd (Okuhara) and the guys will look at the car and see what happened," said Capps, who won the season-opening event at Pomona Raceway in 1998. "The car was really trucking. We figured it was going to run a mid to low 4.80-second pass and something happened and it lit up on fire again."
Capps will attempt to improve his current ranking when the Don Prudhomme-owned green Skoal Racing organization qualifies at noon and 2:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday afternoon. Sunday's final eliminations will kick-off at 11 a.m. (PT).
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the K&N Filters Winternationals at 4:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Feb. 28, and show two hours of final eliminations coverage beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Feb. 29.
