CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES -- PENNZOIL NATIONALS Virginia Motorsports Park -- Richmond, Va. -- Sunday, April 26, 1998
FIRST ROUND NOTES
FUNNY CAR
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, was defeated in the first round by Randy Anderson (5.398/265.56 to 5.160/276.58). Ron's Camaro dropped cylinders again, causing the car to serve towards the centerline.
CAPPS: "We put cylinders out on the left side when we left the starting line. When that happens the car goes left. I had the steering wheel cranked all the way to the right as far as it would go. It put another cylinder out, and I had to give it a quick pedal hoping that it would clear the cylinder up, bt it didn't. Then it put another cylinder out -- that's three cylinders. There's something wrong somewhere. It's starting to show a pattern and so hopefully Roland (Leong, crew chief) can find the problem before we go to Dallas. It would have been nice to gain some ground in points. I'll just have to cheer Chuck Etchells (also in a Camaro Z28 Funny Car) on now."
CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, eliminated Del Worsham in first round (5.078/298.40 to 5.189/278.03).
PRO STOCK
LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS CAMARO Z28, was defeated by Richie Stevens in first round (6.990/196.93 to 6.981/196.29).
MORGAN: "It was cockpit failure. I was a little bit late (.514 R/T to .450 for Stevens), it spun the tires real bad and I shifted every gear at 9600 (rpm) because he (Stevens) was far ahead of me. All I could see was him out there. We ran well every run. I think we're on track now. It's not like we made one run and ran well. I'm pretty happy. There was probably 3-4 hundredths (of a second) left in that run. By shifting so late I was out of the power ban and I spun the tires in low gear. I gave up quite a bit in low gear. We should go to Dallas and run good."
KURT JOHNSON, AC DELCO CAMARO Z28, advances to the second round after beating Larry Nance (7.033/195.77 to 8.865/108.91).
