Solid Start Slots Anderson Second on Friday in Richmond
Summit Racing Pontiac racer Greg Anderson kicked off his qualifying effort at the Virginia NHRA Nationals in fine fashion, posting the second quickest time in each of Friday's twin sessions. After opening with a 6.643-second, 207.30 mph pass in the afternoon session, Anderson improved on his second attempt, posting a 6.627-second time and=2 0208.23 mph top speed to sit second midway through the qualifying procedure. It was a performance that left the three-time champion encouraged about his chances.
"All in all, it wasn't a bad day," said Anderson. "Although we didn't hit the bulls-eye with either Jason or my Summit Pontiacs yet, we're the number two and three qualifiers, and we're within a couple hundredths of the top car. We're not complaining, and it looks like there are a couple bright spots, so if we can get the cars right, we can get even closer to him.
"We're supposed to get a major change in the weather tomorrow, which means that we'll have to start all over with the tune-up. Still, today was encouraging because we don't consider these to be our best conditions for running fast, and we were still within a couple hundredths of Mike Edwards. If the weather does change, I think it will play more into our favor, so we're looking forward to tomorrow, hoping that it doesn't rain."
