Tire Shake Spoils Day for McClenathan, Carrier Boyz Top Fuel Team
Cory McClenathan was disappointed, as were the remainder of the Carrier Boyz FRAM Boost Top Fuel team on a hot, humid Sunday afternoon at Heartland Park Topeka.
"That was unexpected," said McClenathan of his first-round finish. "It's too bad because we had a chance to make up some ground in (POWERade Series) points."
Severe tire shake forced McClenathan to pedal the throttle early in the run and he lost to Doug Herbert, 4.981 seconds at 282.13 mph to 5.010 at 294.95 mph.
"It was operator error," crew chief Wes Cerny remarked after being asked what had happened. "We were short on power when we arrived but over the course of the weekend we got the engine running good again and I just over-tuned it this morning. We over-powered the track. These tires are very sensitive. If you don't have the right power curve they are prone to shake."
McClenathan, ninth with 423 points, returns to competition in the CarQuest Auto Parts Nationals at Joliet, Ill., June 9-11.
