Avon, Ind. (August 7, 2001) When the 2001 CORR EXXON Superflo Series returns to Bark River, MI for the U.P. Off-Road 100 Dynomax Shootout August 11-12, the battle for the Pro-Lite championship will be one of the stories to follow. Rookie Steven Federico of Wilmette, Ill. leads a group of talented rookies who are chasing the defending Pro-Lite champion Jeff Kincaid.
Federico's philosophy going into a race is simple; take what the race gives him, he said. After 10 rounds in the 2001 CORR EXXON Superflo Pro Series, Federico and his Ingle's Market/Mountain Dew Toyota Tacoma have taken that philosophy to second-place in the Pro-Lite standings, 16 points behind Kincaid, 139 to 123.
In 10 rounds, Federico has one victory (Round 8-Bark River) and seven top-five finishes. Federico attributes his success in 2001 from the experience he had while competing in the Single Buggy division. Although the Single Buggy (60-70 horsepower, 1350 pounds) and the Pro-Lite truck (300 horsepower, 2800 pounds) are vastly different, learning to drive the buggy has helped Federico's adjustment.
"I came from a limited horsepower buggy class which taught me how to drive instead of being able to escape my mistakes by my horsepower," he said. "It really taught me (driving the buggy) how to focus and keep my momentum through the corners. That is something you have to do in the Pro-Lite division."
Federico acknowledged that his mindset is to win every race, but he understands that when he is competing in a division where six different drivers have a win this year, it would be nearly impossible. Federico did say that at least one victory was a goal this year. When he did win in Round 8 at Bark River, that helped his confidence heading into the final stretch of the season.
"I know I can win now. I know it can be done," said Federico.
Federico will continue his quest for the Pro-Lite championship this weekend at the Bark River Off-Road Raceway for Rounds 10 and 11 of the CORR EXXON Superflo Series. Ticket prices for the event are $15.00 for one day, and $25.00 for a weekend pass. On Friday, August 10, pre-run action will start at 4:00 p.m. followed by a long-jump competition and concert.
