Having secured third place in class in the recent Gravel Autocross in Sligo, Bekan's Sean McHugh returned to the 'black stuff' and recorded his best ever result in the National Rally Championship.
Competing in the ultra competitive Class 14B in his Peugeot 205 GTi, Sean, with new co-driver Keefe Kilcoyne from Westport secured a magnificent win in the Standard Production category at the Circuit of Munster. Based in Adare, County Limerick eight Special Stages were tackled and the Corrib Oil backed team topped the time sheets all day, holding off a posse of similar Peugeots in the process.
Sean expressed his delight upon receiving the Thomond Crystal for his successful drive. "Apart from the overall winner, I am the happiest man here today. We had a great battle all day trying to keep the opposition at bay, pushing hard from stage to stage. Thankfully, the Peugeot held up to the pressure although the clutch plate will need replacing before we compete in the Sligo Stages Rally. As the original date for the rally has now been moved to July 23rd, it will give us more time to prepare. >From this good result we will be going all out to secure second place in the Dunlop National Championship for the remainder of the season."
