CANADA (May 17, 2003) -- Shawn Morrison, of Center Conway, N.H., captured his first-ever SCCA Pro Spec Racer victory today at Mosport International Raceway, part of the Ontario More To Discover Victoria Day Trans-Am Weekend. Keith Scharf, of St. Louis, Mo., and Chris Funk, of Kansas City, Mo., completed the top three.
Starting from the pole, Morrison swapped the lead back and forth repeatedly with Scharf over the course of the 18 lap event. Taking the lead for the last time on lap 13, he went on to capture the victory by a 0.501-second margin.
"Keith [Scharf] was on me the whole race," said Morrison, who finished third in this event last year. "It was a great battle with Chris [Funk] and Keith. It was an excellent race, with everyone racing each other clean."
"Shawn really showed us the way around today," said Scharf, who finished second in the Championship last season. "He was tough last year and has really improved this season."
Kelly Toombs, of Prairie Village, Kan., and Joe Calasacco, of Greenwich, Conn., completed the top five. Toombs was awarded the Sunoco Hard Charger Award after passing the most competitors during the race.
